"Their response left us speechless," said Mr Somchai. One morning, Mr Somchai, who is fondly called Uncle Toi, took the Bangkok Post in his boat for a close look at the canal. Mr Somchai said locals believe that the sewage and chemical waste released from factories are to blame for the canal's pollution. "There is a monk who rows a boat along the canal to collect alms from Buddhist residents every morning," Mr Somchai said. Mr Somchai said locals believe a system dysfunction at the gate is partly responsible for the pollution.
